The Rev’d Caroline Symcox will talk to members about the popular Fairford tourist attraction – the medieval stained glass windows of St Mary’s Church. Meeting will take place on Thursday 24th November at 7.30pm in St Mary’s Church and there will also be a guided tour of the 28 world famous windows.
Did you know that St Mary’s is the only parish church in the land that has retained a complete set of amazing medieval glass? During WW2, all the windows were taken out of the church and hidden to protect them from enemy bombing.
Some of the characters depicted in the windows are not who they appear to be. For example, in Window 7, there is a female figure in Tudor court dress. Many believe this figure commemorates the wife of John Tame, who started the rebuilding of St Mary’s Church in 1490, but others think she is more probably a hidden portrait of Princess Mary, daughter of Henry VII.
