A modern version of a Shakespearean classic
The classic and timeless Shakespeare play, Henry V, is currently running to rave reviews at The Barn Theatre, Cirencester. First night was on Wednesday 22nd May and it runs until Saturday 22nd June.
It really is a production not to be missed. The production is totally modernised, bringing the theme and story of the play right up to date with the current political times and disputes of today’s world.
The actors wear modern day combat gear and use contemporary warfare weaponry such as machine guns, bombs, AK-47s and hand pistols. However, it is not for the faint-hearted as there are ear-splitting explosions, deafening gun-shot noises and flashing laser effects.
If you have ever been put off from seeing a Shakespeare production, then ease yourself in gently to enjoy the Bard’s words by going along to hear the mix of Shakespearean dialogue with present-day speak. Another twist on the original adaptation is that instead of men playing the women’s roles as they would have done in Shakespearean times, the Barn Theatre’s version of Henry V has women playing some of the male parts.
Aaron Sidwell and Lauren Samuels star as Henry V and Henry’s wife, Catherine of Valois respectively, realistically bring the characters to life and drawing comparisons with today’s royals. Aaron Sidwell’s portrayal of King Henry shows young Harry divesting himself of his reputation as a fun-loving, party-mad prince and taking on a more responsible and upright nature as a leader and ruler of his country.
There is still time to book your seats at this memorable production and you can also enjoy a pre- or post-theatre dinner at Teatro – just next door. Parking is easy and free just across the road in the Beeches car park.
